plettenbergbay

It is not surprising that the first Portuguese explorers on the Southern coasts called Plettenberg Bay Baia Formosa: Beautiful Bay. The town is a gem of the Garden Route, loved by tourists for the beauty of the sprawling bay, not to mention the sea and animal life thriving in the waters and coastal forests. Mesolithic remains in the caves of Robberg suggests ancient peoples found the area as paradisical as we do now.

thecrags

The Crags lies between seaside towns of Plettenberg Bay and Nature’s Valley, and offers a contrast to their coastal attractions. In this forested area the tourist can find much to see and do: sanctuaries for mammals, birds and reptiles, arts and crafts industries, a famous theatre and even a beautiful wine estate. Approximately 20 minutes drive from Plateau Country House, it is an ideal destination for a day trip.

nature’svalley

Plateau’s closest neighbour, the aptly named Nature’s Valley, is one of the most beautiful and secluded spots on the Southern coast of Africa. The tiny town has much to enjoy, including a lagoon, a pristine beach, and a restaurant where pub fare and informality make all feel welcome.

thetsitsikamma

The Tsitsikamma biome is a source of wonder for all nature lovers. It includes the rare and fragile temperate coastal rainforest, a cathedral-like haven of ancient trees, the rich smell of humus and the muted trickle of many streams and rivulets coursing through the pebbles and ferny undergrowth.  The forest grows to the edge of the jagged coast where the Indian Ocean constantly and spectacularly rages against the black rocks. Although there are many activities and adventures to be enjoyed, nature itself is the star attraction of the Tsitsikamma.
